10.15 Frame imperfections can lose points from an otherwise prize-winning frame of comb honey.

FULLNESS

Judges give the highest marks to frames that have been well drawn out.

COLOUR OF CAPPING

Cappings should be white with no differences in colour across the surface. Differences in colour may indicate different floral types stored across the frame and this will lose the competitor valuable marks.

EVENNESS

The surface of the wax should be even with no depressions or rises.

GENERAL APPEARANCE

It is important that both the capped honey and the frame are pleasing to look at. When setting up a super to prepare quality entries for competition the beekeeper should ensure that only new frames are used, as this will give an overall better appearance to the entry being judged. To ensure this, the beekeeper interested in entering competitions should inspect hives early in the season and any defective or dirty frames should be replaced with new frames. If the frame selected for competition entry has some minor blemishes these can be removed very carefully with fine sandpaper.

In order to protect the competition frame against damage, a frame holder may easily be made or purchased from a beekeeping supply store.
